English summary:

This article is based on my own experience of listening to the music of Adam Michna while reading a book by James Gleick about chaos theory. Chaos theory covers a range of approaches – to medicine, weather forecasting, geometry – that challenge intuitive understandings of how the universe works. For me, the music and the ideas seemed to “fuse” in a way which was extremely powerful, but also resistant to traditional modes of analysis. When we add to this mix the elusive effect of Czechness, and the actual difficulty of recouping just what happened in the past, the stakes go up immeasurably. In the end I argue that we must rigorously ask ourselves what we know and how we think we know it, and acknowledge that documents and documentation alone will tell us almost nothing of real value. Part of the responsibility of our field involves the investigation of uncertainties.

České resumé:

Tento článek vychází z mé vlastní zkušenosti, kdy jsem při poslechu hudby Adama Michny četl knihu Jamese Gleicka o teorii chaosu. Teorie chaosu zahrnuje celou řadu přístupů k medicíně, předpovědi počasí, geometrii, které zpochybňují intuitivní chápání fungování vesmíru. Zdálo se mi, že hudba a myšlenky se „spojily“ způsobem, který byl nesmírně silný, ale zároveň odolný vůči tradičním způsobům analýzy. Když k této směsici přidáme neuchopitelný účinek českosti a skutečnou obtížnost obnovit jen to, co se stalo v minulosti, sázka se nesmírně zvýší. Nakonec tvrdím, že se musíme důsledně ptát, co víme a jak si myslíme, že to víme, a uznat, že samotné dokumenty a dokumentace nám neřeknou téměř nic skutečně hodnotného. Součástí odpovědnosti našeho oboru je zkoumání nejistot.
